The Main Attractions of the World's Aquarium
Of all the amazing creatures that call the seas of La Paz home, there are two that will make the most indelible impressions: whale sharks and gray whales.
Swim with whale sharks. From September to February, experience the incredible sensation of swimming with whale sharks. Gentle and slow moving, these plankton-eating giants are amazing enough just to watch; swimming in the warm waters with them makes for a once-in-a-lifetime day.
Whale-watching season. If you're visiting La Paz in mid-January to the end of March, make sure to treat yourself to a day of whale watching. Every year like clockwork, after spending the summer feeding in Alaska, gray whales begin their incredible migration south to Baja California. They travel for two to three months to reach the warmer southern waters where they mate and birth. Large numbers of grays predictably congregate in three bays along Baja's west coast: Laguna Ojo de Liebre, Laguna San Ignacio and Bahia Magdalena. The gray whales will sometimes even swim near small skiffs and allow the human touch.

Some History
Renowned Spanish explorer Hernan de Cortez discovered the area that is now La Paz in 1535. At first, he referred to the area as Bahía y Puerto de Santa Cruz. After he and some 300 colonists took control, he renamed it La Paz, or "City of Peace."

Paceños
Locals here are known as "paceños," and you don't have to be born in La Paz to earn the designation; expatriates also have the title. Paceños are known for being laid-back people who spend weekends on the beach and evenings strolling the Malecón at sunset.

Left Hand Turn
If you find yourself behind the wheel in Mexico, note the correct way to make a left hand turn. You will pull over to the right hand lane and stop. Cars will pass you on the inside lane. When that traffic is clear, you can turn left.

La Paz has a desert climate, with over 300 days of sun per year. The average temperature during the winter months is in the 70s; during the summer it's in the 90s. Hurricane season runs from May through early October, but your chances of being caught in a severe storm are slim.
